Every February 17th, both in the US and New Zealand, the praises of politeness are sung. Because this date is celebrated in both countries as the so-called day of spontaneous niceties (English. Random Acts of Kindness Day – also for short: RAK Day). Reason enough to include this event in the collection of curious holidays from all over the world and to tell the story behind it below. What distinguishes the RAK?

Who started Random Acts of RAK Day?

It doesn’t take too much imagination to think that the name says it all. Because today it is a matter of making everyday life a little more pleasant for others and for yourself through more or less spontaneous gestures of politeness or kindness. On closer inspection, the Random Acts of Kindness Day is not a singular action, but an integral part of an entire action week, the so-called Random Acts of Kindness Week.

Both were brought into being by the New Zealanders Josh de Jong, Marshall Gray, Megan Singleton and Reuben Gwyn in 2005, although I could not find any specific reason or indication for choosing today’s date. Anyway, the message will definitely be that clear too. In this context, the makers like to refer to a number of psychological studies that have shown that such nice gestures have a positive effect for both the giver and the recipient.

Accordingly, the Random Acts of Kindness Day in New Zealand as well as in the USA is meanwhile also used by many charities in the country to point out their own concerns or to hope that people will be willing to donate on this day of action. Many schools are also using the Random Acts of Kindness Day to emphasize the importance of friendliness and politeness to their students on February 17th through various school activities.

In this respect, of course, the proximity to thematically related holidays and action days such as the following dates is also noticeable:

• US American World Hugging Day – National Hugging Day on January 21,
• the day of compliments (English National Compliment Day) on January 24th,
• World Compliment Day on March 1st,
• World Gratitude Day on September 21,
• World Kindness Day on November 13th or World Hello Day on November 21.

At least six ideas on how to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day

Such a day of action naturally invites you to name a few suitable suggestions and ideas on how you can celebrate today’s day of action (more or less) spontaneously:

• Register / work as a volunteer for a good cause
• Hold the door open for someone or let them go first.
• Do his neighbors a favor.
• Start a collection of used clothes or toys for the needy.
• Do something to protect the environment.
• Make friendliness a personal priority.

And for those of you who can’t do anything with it, February 17th offers the World Human Spirit Day, the US National Cabbage Day, or On the day of the milk coffee (English National Café au Lait Day) a number of calendar alternatives or combination possibilities.

However you celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day, remember that a small gesture of kindness can make everyday life a little better. Whether in New Zealand, in the United States or anywhere else in the world. 🙂
