On the calendar of curious public holidays from all over the world, February 21 is all about tourist and tour guides. At least according to the World Federation of Tourist Guide Association (WFTGA), which has declared this date to be International Tourist Guide Day (ITGD) since 1990. Reason enough to take a closer look at the World Guest Guide Day (WGGD) and tell its story in the following lines.

Why is World Tour Guide Day on February 21?

The election of February 21st goes back to the founding day of the world association, whereby in Germany one is faced with the problem that the events either have to take place during the week or collide with the carnival days.

Therefore, many of the participating clubs move their actions to the weekend before or after February 21st. For example in 2017, when the kick-off event was brought forward to February 18 and 19.

Whether there is also a connection in terms of content to the International Mother Language Day, which is also celebrated today, or the US American Card Reading Day or the Day of the Sweet Snails (Engl. National Sticky Bun Day), I could not find out in the course of research.

Who started the International Tourist Guide Day?

As indicated at the beginning, the initiative for the International Tourist Guide Day goes back to an initiative of the World Federation of Tourist Guide Association (WFTGA) under the direction of President Titina Loizides. In 1990 there were only 15 participating countries, the WFTGA can now count on the participation of numerous organizations affiliated with the association.

In order to be able to pursue this activity, a state examination has to be taken in most EU countries and accordingly a further focus of the action day is on the issue of differentiating yourself from self-appointed tour guides who offer their services for expensive money without the appropriate qualifications .
